As you probably guessed my name is Sarah Watson. I’m a writer for stage and screen but I wasn’t always… My personal life has been one hell of a ride. I was a troubled child because of the life I was so-called “living” at that time. I went to behaviour support schools and never really completed much education. So imagine my surprise when in 2016 I applied for New Writing North’s Northern Rock Talent Fund and won. Me. Someone who had lived on the streets, had not one qualification to her name, a council estate resident, an ex mental health hospital patient etc. etc. the list goes on. What I’m trying to say is people like me don’t win anything. Well that’s what I thought, but I was wrong.
The team at New Writing North are dedicated to nurturing new talent. With their support I have received mentoring from the Award-winning writer Carina Rodney. She has shown me how to develop characters that stay with you on-and-off the stage and screen. I feel as through I have had a thorough education in the art of scriptwriting from Carina, and will use the techniques she has taught me for the rest of my life.
I have also had help from Ruth Johnson. She has taught me to consider the differences between my job and the director’s job. I was one of those writers who liked to direct off the page. (Bear with me I’m still learning.) She has taught me the importance of “show don’t tell.” How a thousand words can be said with a simple action, and the difference that can make.
Since meeting Carina and Ruth I have written several stage plays and have other projects in development. I have attended rehearsals with Curious Monkey theatre company shadowing their Artistic Director Amy Golding. I then went on to get my first professional writing credit in the form of screenwriter for Curious Monkey Theatre companys 360 film.
Recently I was chosen as a participant for BFI NETWORK Film Hub North short script labs.
There will be a rehearsed reading of extracts of these short films 24th October DINA Sheffield. For more info Click here
